The Backdoor Explorer's Guide to Anal Sex

The Backdoor Explorer's Guide to Anal Sex

Let's talk about anal sex. Yes, we said anal sex!

We're guessing if you've read this article, anal sex has probably crossed your mind at some point. Maybe you're 100% ready to try it, or maybe you're just curious. Either way, you've come to the right place! While backdoor play can seem intimidating, all it takes is a little preparation (and lots of lube) to safely enter the pleasurable world of anal sex.

Communicate

When it comes to sex and relationships, communication will always be at the top of our list, even more so when it comes to trying something new in the bedroom. Making sure both partners are on the same page is key, so don't be afraid to share your desires, as well as your concerns, before, during, and after any new sexual experience.

Practice

If you're getting ready to try anal sex for the first time, there's a way to prepare and experiment without your partner: use an anal training kit ! This set of three or four silicone butt plugs in a variety of sizes is designed to help you comfortably build your tolerance and slowly get used to larger sizes. An important note: as with partnered anal sex (see below), lubricant is a MUST with any type of butt plug or vibrator.

Lubricate

We can't emphasize this enough: lube, lube, and more lube! Aside from having an open conversation with your partner, proper lubrication is THE most important thing for successful backdoor play. Unlike the vagina, the anus doesn't lubricate, so before inserting anything (penises included), apply a generous (read: A LOT) of lube first. For ultra-smooth entry, try a silicone lube. that it is highly concentrated and long-lasting.

Relax

Is communication just as important as lubrication? Relaxation. Start the night with a little foreplay (and maybe some wine!) to set the mood and loosen your muscles. The last thing you want is to tense up, so take it as slowly as you like: Have your partner start by inserting a finger or two to test the waters, and if you're ready, take it from there. For extra comfort, you can relax (and unwind!) with a soothing anal gel .

Protect

Even if you're very comfortable and committed to your partner, it's always a good idea to use a condom during anal sex to prevent the spread of bacteria or STIs. Additionally, it may be a good idea to clean yourself off beforehand with a shower, or if you prefer, an anal douche . Finally, if you plan on having vaginal sex at any point during your sex session (or should we say anal sex?), never switch from anal to vaginal penetration, as that can lead to infection.

Once you feel more comfortable, you can take things to the next level by adding toys designed specifically for anal play Choose toys with different textures, shapes, and vibrations to really enhance the experience. That said, if you've decided anal sex isn't for you, that's okay too!
